Toyota is charging ahead with its plans to expand the Prius range, with a compact people-mover as one of its top priorities. Now in its final stages of development, the Prius mini-minivan, dubbed Alpha, will be the first vehicle in the Prius line to use lithium-ion batteries when it debuts in March 2011.

Just one-third the weight of the nickel-metal hydride battery pack used in the current production Prius sedan, the new lithium-ion batteries generate greater power and are already in use in the prototype Prius plug-in hybrid.

In case you haven’t been perusing the record books, it was the hottest summer ever in New York City. Without a weekend getaway planned, I opted for a day trip to the DIA Museum in Beacon, New York. It was just my luck that on the particular day in choice, the 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan was parked in the Brooklyn HQ of the Gotryke driveway.

toyota introduced the boldly redesigned 2011 Avalon today at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. Evoking a time when travel was sophisticated, elegant and comfortable, the new Avalon possesses a distinctive new exterior style while offering a restyled interior rich with premium touch points and practical new technologies.


For 2011, the Toyota Avalon’s previous three trim levels—XL, XLS, and Limited—have been culled to just V6 and V6 Limited. As a result, an entry-level Avalon now costs the same as an outgoing XLS model.

The Avalon now starts at $32,995, equal to the 2010 mid-range model. (For 2010, the base Avalon model cost $28,695.) The 2011 Limited starts at $36,235, a small increase from the $36,035 commanded by the outgoing Limited trim.

The Avalon V6 is pretty well equipped, with 17-inch alloy wheels, power front seats with leather all around, iPod and Bluetooth connectivity, and more. Stepping up to the V6 Limited adds a keyless ignition system, heated and cooled front seats, aluminum door-sill plates, rain-sensing wipers, HID headlights, and a 660-watt sound system upgrade. Both models come with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

The 2010 Toyota Tundra will be priced from $22,960 for the Regular Cab 4×2 standard bed with a V6 engine and equipped with a Work Truck Package, to $42,155 for the CrewMax Limited 4×4 with the top V8 engine. The new MSRP list reflects an average increase of $557.

All 2010 Tundra models now benefit from extra standard and optional exterior, mechanical, safety and convenience features, including an all-new 4.6L V8 engine option, derived from Lexus engines.

The new 4.6L V8 engine will be available on all 2010 model year Tundras. With 310 hp, 327 lb-ft of torque and EPA fuel efficiency estimates of 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway on 4×2 models, the new engine is expected to be the volume choice. Like the Tundra’s optional 5.7L V8 engine, the new 4.6L V8 will be mated with a six-speed automatic transmission.
